Ladies and gentlemen,
I, too, am confident about the future. With our innovative strength, we have in the past succeeded not only in developing good products, but also in setting important new market trends ourselves, creating added value both for our customers and for our company. Just think of Desmodur® hardeners and DD Coatings, which have become renowned the world over. Another example is the area of waterborne coating materials, where we have been doing pioneering development work for many years.
In the Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties Business Unit, innovation follows various paths. Essentially, it takes in our complete innovation landscape. One important dimension is the development of new products for existing applications, marked here in blue. I will give you some examples of these in a minute. We also develop new applications, illustrated here by the yellow horizontal arrow. Finally, our “Functional Films” unit in particular is moving on to new pastures, along the green arrow. With our experience, know-how and innovative strength, we are developing new solutions in new fields. Dr. Wolff has already given you some examples.
Here at the European Coatings Show, surface coatings and adhesives take center stage. Nowadays, every individual application has its own complex requirements that have to be met, and this can only be done effectively with a well-stocked toolbox of raw materials.
That is why we have opted for complementary solutions such as low-solvent and solvent-free raw materials for DD Coatings and waterborne dispersions. Quality, efficiency and ecology are the key, and we ensure that all our solutions take these aspects fully into account.
Polyaspartic binders from the Desmophen® NH product range are a good example. Such gel coats and pore fillers, for example, are nowadays used to economically coat rotors for the wind turbines already mentioned by Dr. Wolff. Polyaspartates are becoming increasingly popular wherever the demand is for high film thickness, top mechanical properties and efficient, flexible application.
In the field of crosslinking agents, asymmetric trimers are one such success story. They have since grown out of the laboratory and become successful high-growth products. For this reason, trial product XP 2410 has now become commercial product Desmodur® N 3900 – a truly universal crosslinking agent. By the way, even now, more than half the Desmodur® N 3900 sold is used to formulate waterborne coating systems due to its excellent emulsifying properties.
This brings me to the central topic of my presentation today and also to the motto of our exhibition stand: “Water is green”. This stands for our conviction that waterborne coatings and adhesive systems are the systems of the future for technological and ecological reasons. The demand for high-grade, environmentally friendly products that are easy to produce and use is intensifying this trend, and making it even more attractive for us to develop and supply such solutions.
Bayhydrol® and Bayhydur® in particular are an expression of this commitment but so, too, are brands such as Bayhytherm®, Dispercoll®, Impranil® and Baybond®. The reason why Desmodur® also belongs with this group is due above all to the unique asymmetric trimer.
We have responded to the growing importance of waterborne dispersions by setting up a global production network of world-scale plants in America, Europe and Asia, symbolized here by the red dots.
The youngest of these sites is in Asia. With our modern polyurethane dispersions plant in Shanghai, we created the basis last year for supplying the Asia-Pacific region with waterborne dispersions from local sources. At present, the key products are the adhesive raw material Dispercoll® U for the footwear industry and binders for wood/furniture finishes.
State-of-the-art production technologies – such as the efficient acetone process with its solvent cycle – ensure that products and processes meet to an equal extent the requirements of a “green” value chain.
Waterborne coating resins already account for 14 percent of the world market. The latter has a volume of around 7 million metric tons. Conventional resins still account for nearly two thirds.
We expect the share of conventional resins to decline by around 5 percentage points by 2016. The waterborne resins will benefit most from this, and their share will rise to 17 percent. At the same time, despite the current economic turbulence, we expect the overall market to grow significantly and reach a volume of 9.5 million metric tons by the year 2016. In absolute figures, this means volume growth for waterborne coating resins of nearly 65 percent in the next seven years.
To drive this growth, and also take account of the many varied market and customer requirements, we must have a well-stocked toolbox of raw materials.
I would like to show you using the example of Bayhydrol® that we are already ideally equipped in this respect. Our Bayhydrol® range consists of a total of eight product grades, including polyurethane and polyacrylate dispersions, their hybrids, polyesters, copolymers and radiation curing systems.
Based on these products, OH-functional U and A grades along with combination binders of the UH grade allow the formulation of high-performance, two-component coating systems.
Supplemented by the polyesters, one-component baking systems can also be formulated on this basis, using blocked isocyanates and other crosslinking agents.
One-component coatings that react at room temperature can be formulated with the high molecular weight polyurethane and polyacrylate dispersions, the PU/PAC hybrids and the polybutadiene copolymers.
Finally, the Bayhydrol® UV product range allows the formulation of waterborne, radiation-curing coating systems.
Let me now introduce you to a few new and particularly noteworthy products from this binder toolbox.
First of all, we have the waterborne polyacrylate dispersions such as Bayhydrol® A 2646, which have been internally activated by a patented process. These OH-functional binders have similar drying times to the fastest two-component epoxide systems, without any shortening of the pot life. They attain their final properties very quickly, making them ideal for applications such as floor coatings. The systems are noted for their superb drying behavior and light stability.
Drying can be speeded up even further by combination with special hardeners such as Bayhydur® XP 2759. This anionic, internally modified trimer of isophorone diisocyanate needs no external emulsifier. The formulated products are noted for their long pot life and high blistering threshold, and the final films have excellent resistance properties. Generally speaking, the Bayhydur® range of crosslinking agents dovetails perfectly with our range of OH-functional binders.
Coatings based on the polyacrylate dispersion Bayhydrol® A XP 2695 have even better resistance properties than conventional, solventborne two-component polyurethane coatings, making them especially suitable for easy-to-clean applications.
With their outstanding chemical resistance, even to aggressive hydraulic fluids, they are setting a new standard on the market. They also have good stain resistance, are highly scratch-resistant even in matte formulations, and they are also very weather-resistant. We have verified these outstanding resistance properties in many laboratory tests.
But the Bayhydrol® toolbox contains innovations not only for two-component systems. We can now offer manufacturers of one-component coatings entirely new possibilities, particularly in the high-end segment. For this purpose, we have launched our new Bayhydrol® AH product range. These are high-molecular weight, waterborne polyacrylate dispersions that combine the economic attractiveness of polyacrylates with outstanding performance.
The AH grades have outstanding chemical resistance and can be used universally, also as combination binders, in many different kinds of coatings.
Bayhydrol® AH XP 2741 offers these benefits specifically for waterborne wood finishes. This is demonstrated in the spinning web diagram shown on the left, where the new product is compared with standard market products. The new product combines the benefits of conventional “core-shell” polymers with those of self-crosslinking binders, namely high chemical resistance, superior scratch resistance and a low co-solvent requirement. In a nutshell: all-round resistance at an attractive price.
Moreover, the new dispersion is suitable for the formulation of both pigmented and clear coats. Bayhydrol® AH XP 2754, another product in this range, has been specifically developed for the one-component coating of plastics. Another new product for metal coatings will follow shortly.
Let me stay with plastics. As you know, radiation-curing coatings are frequently used in high-end applications such as plastic housings.
Bayhydrol® UV XP 2689 makes it possible for the very first time to coat mobile phones entirely without organic solvents. The new product can be used to formulate not only highly resistant clearcoats but also UV-curing metallic-effect coatings as single-coat systems. The net result is a high-gloss finish with excellent adhesion, high hardness and low yellowing tendency. Its resistance to high temperatures, solvents, sun creams, skin creams and perspiration is also very good. Various tests have also shown that such systems have high abrasion resistance, too.
Waterborne UV coating systems have a wide variety of economic and ecological advantages, especially for industrial application. They cure very quickly through radiation and thus pave the way for outstanding productivity.
Now for my last example: Dr. Wolff has already spoken about nanotechnology, which is a platform technology for us, also in the field of coating materials. One of our new products is Bayhydrol® A XP 2743, which contains 21 percent silicon dioxide particles homogeneously dispersed in the coating matrix, as can be seen in the AF micrograph. The silicon dioxide makes the formulated coating very resistant indeed to dry scratching. It also has very high transparency. Furthermore, its pronounced self-healing effect over the course of time or at elevated temperatures ensures that the coated object retains its attractiveness over a long period.
With that, ladies and gentlemen, I will conclude my presentation of some of our new products for the European Coatings Show. “Water is green” is for us more than just the motto for the exhibition. It also demonstrates our conviction that waterborne raw materials represent a sound basis for “green” value chains. We are also convinced that the future success of waterborne coating systems can only be safeguarded by linking together ecological targets with the economic targets of quality and efficiency. We want to make our contribution to this through our innovative ideas and developments.
We look forward to welcoming you to our stand in Hall 7A to introduce you to other new products on this and other topics – topics I have been unable to deal with today for reasons of time.
Finally, I would like to take another look at our innovation landscape. Perhaps you are interested where we are going with waterborne raw materials, and where we want to set new trends. I might be able to tell you more about that at the next ECS.
Let me begin with product development:
The vast majority of our polyurethane dispersions are already solvent-free. With many polyacrylates, we have been able to significantly reduce the co-solvent content. We intend to continue along this path of “low-co-solvent” to “co-solvent-free”. We have our eye on a number of new fields of application, such as heavy-duty corrosion control.
Now for the horizontal dimension:
We recently launched Baycusan®, a range of waterborne polyurethane dispersions for cosmetic and medical use. We are convinced that we can tap other attractive fields of application. We have, for example, begun to develop products for decorative cosmetics in addition to the existing ones for hair and skin care.
Finally the green arrow, Functional Films. These are, for example, highly resistant films that offer solutions for flexible printed electronics for the next generation of products in the fields of light, security and display. We are also very much involved with new generations of solar cells based on nanotechnology and nanoparticles for highly scratch-resistant or electrically conductive paint films. As you can see, “nano” is omnipresent.
And I also see a big future for nano applications in both the films segment and in waterborne coating systems.
