Covestro develops transparent grades of thermoplastic polyurethanes

Versatile plastics for modern ski boots

Today’s high-performance ski boots are lightweight and provide a comfortable, but snug fit. The outer shell protects skiers from injuries and reliably transmits force to the skis. At the K 2016 plastics trade fair, Covestro will be showcasing a new ski boot, the Salomon X-Pro 70 W. It is the right boot for all types of skiing, boasting low weight and well-balanced performance features.

The ski boot’s lower shell is made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) from Covestro. This plastic is excellently suited to this application because it combines high stiffness and an attractive appearance with a long service life and wear resistance.

The upper cuff gets its strength from a reinforced rear, lateral insert. In contrast, the softer front cuff ensures that the boot has a snug, but flexible fit on the leg. It likewise is made of TPU.

Durable materials for the slopes
Covestro also is exhibiting transparent grades of its Desmopan® DP 96xx line at K 2016. They offer a unique degree of design freedom and a view of the internal workings of the boot.

The special property of these new products is their high transparency. It is so high, in fact, that they can be used in wall thicknesses of up to six millimeters with no noticeable clouding. The polyether TPUs are resistant to hydrolysis, microbes and UV exposure, making them ideal for outdoor applications such as ski boots and soccer shoes.

The plastics are flexible and elastic over a wide range of temperatures, but at the same time very durable, satisfying all demands with respect to wear resistance, tensile strength and scratch resistance. Moreover, they contain no plasticizers or halogens. At the end of their service life, the TPU material can be recycled.

The new transparent Desmopan® DP 96xx grades from Covestro can be injection-molded but also extruded, for instance to fabricate tubes, sections and flat films.
