Seven finalists revealed for 2016 student plastics design competition

Students come up with novel ideas for helping animals

Seven students have come up with some animal magic to reach the finals of the 2016 Design Innovation in Plastics (DIP) competition, headline sponsored by Covestro. This competition, first introduced in 1985, provides opportunities for design students to make a name for themselves by designing products, primarily from plastics, that would solve a real problem and be commercially viable.

This year's DIP competition asked them to come up with a product which would improve animal wellbeing. So varied were the ideas submitted that seven designs rather than the usual six were shortlisted for the final judging stage, due to take place on May 20. Almost every competition entry addressed a different problem involving a very broad range of animals, from horses, cats and dogs to reptiles, chickens, hedgehogs and even fish.

The DIP competition, coordinated since 2001 by the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and the Worshipful Company of Horners, offers a cash prize of £1,000 to the winner and a week with headline industry sponsor Covestro at its headquarters in Germany. Additionally, the winner enjoys a work placement at PriestmanGoode, a leading global design agency. Another special feature of the award is that all finalists win industrial placements with other competition sponsors.

The seven designs shortlisted for this year's final judging stage are:

Unicomb, an ‘all in 1’ grooming product, designed by Ciaran Brennan, Dublin Institute of Technology
Flex, a quick-release surcingle, designed by Annabel Burton, Nottingham Trent University
Twoof Brush Ball, a ball for dogs that combines play with toothbrushing, designed by Paige Hobday, Coventry University
Petect, a lungworm preventive outdoor dog feeder, designed by Karl Martin, Dublin Institute of Technology
Medi-Play medication dispenser, designed by Suraj Soren, Northumbria University
Crib Bite, cribbing preventer for horses, designed by Eric Tan, Northumbria University
PetStep, a ramp for injured, disabled or elderly pets designed by Alex Wyman, Nottingham Trent University

Since its creation, the prestigious Design Innovation in Plastics competition has provided opportunities for young design students to kick-start their careers. It promotes innovative design, raises awareness of high-tech plastics and supports universities as institutes of excellence in this field.
