Paige Kassalen is a commercial trainee for Covestro LLC. She has held this position since June 2015, based out of the company’s North American headquarters in Pittsburgh. In fall 2015, Kassalen was selected to represent Covestro on the Solar Impulse Ground Crew. In this role, she travels with the Solar Impulse 2 (Si2) plane as it completes its historic flight around the world.
The Ground Crew is a team that assists the plane during take-off and landing along with completing daily operations to aid in mission success. Her specific responsibilities include taxiing the plane onto the runway for take-off and being a part of the catching crew to catch the wing of the plane when it lands. She is also part of the team that sets up a temporary, inflatable hangar utilized to house the plane in locations where a traditional hangar is unavailable.
Kassalen joined Covestro in 2014 as a process control technology intern at its Baytown, Texas, plant site. Prior to joining Covestro, she gained valuable experience in her field completing her Electrical Engineering capstone project with Intel and internships with Westinghouse Electric Company and Federal Mogul.
The Pittsburgh native graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. Kassalen is an active member of the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Pittsburgh Chapter, serving as president in 2015. She is also involved in the Women’s Leadership Council – United Way of Allegheny County, Pittsburgh Social Exchange and Washington Health Systems’ Patient and Family Centered Care board.
