Covestro develops material solutions for mobile patient care

New plastic for wearable medical devices

Wearable medical devices are a response to the trend toward out-patient treatment and in-home care. The small, lightweight products can perform a number of functions without limiting a patient’s mobility.

Covestro, formerly Bayer MaterialScience, markets material solutions based on the high-performance plastic polycarbonate (PC) that fulfill the demands of both manufacturers and patients. The company will be presenting Makroblend® M525, its new polycarbonate/polyester blend, at the Compamed trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany, from November 16 to 19, 2015. It was developed specifically for the growing market for wearable medical devices.

Wide-ranging material requirements
“Wearables” can, for instance, monitor vital signs during physical activity or administer drugs. The tasks they perform are highly diverse, as are the demands imposed on the materials used to make them. Makroblend® M525 displays good resistance to body lotions, other skincare products and cleansers. The plastic also meets all international standards for the biological testing of medical devices, first and foremost Cytotoxicity (ISO 10993-5) and Irritation and Sensitization (ISO 10993-10).

Diverse design possibilities
The new plastic is very durable and exhibits high impact resistance. It is dimensionally stable, can be formed into any shape and produced in a great many shades to fulfill today’s design requirements for wearable medical devices. Furthermore, it is compatible with standard manufacturing processes, such as ultrasonic welding and adhesive bonding. So when it comes to functionality and productivity, Makroblend® M525 meets all current requirements imposed on wearable medical devices.

Covestro’s range of thermoplastic products for medical equipment further includes special grades of the polycarbonate Makrolon® and the heat-resistant variant Apec® as well as Bayblend®-brand PC+ABS blends.
