The new hair styling polymer Baycusan® C 1010 keeps your hair in place without affecting the look – even in very damp or dry climates. The styling products leave your hair looking and feeling pleasantly natural.

These days, a trendy, fashionable hairstyle is a crucial element of a well-groomed appearance. Styling should give hair a strong and lasting hold while maintaining a natural feel. Although it may seem impossible to reconcile these two requirements, the development of the new hair styling polymer Baycusan® C 1010 makes it a reality. Covestro will be showcasing this new product at the in-cosmetics trade fair in Paris from April 12 to 14, 2016, at Stand No. E55.

The polyurethane dispersion is used in waterborne hairstyling formulations such as waxes, lotions, creams and foams. The polymer forms a flexible and elastic film around the hair and protects it in any weather, without sticking. At the same time, it provides the hairstyle with lasting hold and can be combed out without leaving any residue. One of the most important criteria for Asian hair, in particular, is that there is no flaking.

“Alongside our multi-talented raw materials Baycusan® C 1001 and C 1008, which were developed principally for the hair care sector, this new product opens up innovative solutions in hairstyling,” said Dr. Paula Rodrigues, head of Cosmetics at Covestro. Furthermore, the raw material is registered in the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) under the name ‘Polyurethane-35’ and is approved in China.

Strong hold in any weather
Baycusan® C 1010 keeps your hair in place without affecting the look. The styling products leave your hair looking pleasantly natural. When the new polymer is used, the outstanding styling properties are retained even in very damp air or in a dry climate.

The standard method of checking the effect of moisture is to measure high humidity curl retention. “Both the usual test of hair at 65 percent relative humidity and the stricter test at 90 percent relative humidity gave a clear result – the styled hair stays in place for a long time,” said Dr. Sophie Viala, head of business development for cosmetics at Covestro.

Covestro conducted comprehensive tests to examine hold with Asian and Caucasian hair. Baycusan® C 1010 provides hold that is comparable to conventional styling polymers, but also delivers outstanding flexibility – both criteria fulfilling current market requirements. Baycusan® C 1010 achieves an extremely high initial hold, as determined using the three-point flexural strength method.

Innovative hair care formulations
Last year, product innovations incorporating Baycusan® C 1008 caused a stir in the hair care and styling market. Adding just two percent is enough to give hair care formulations the triple benefit of “Protect – Repair – Style.” Baycusan® C 1008 has been shown to form a micro-fine and highly elastic film around the hair that protects it from breakage. It also exhibits superior heat resistance and protects the hair up to 270 degrees Celsius.

The polymer also shields hair just as effectively against the effects of humidity, making it an ideal and proven anti-frizz tool. At the same time, it is capable of “cementing” split ends. Last but not least, Baycusan® C 1008 lends hair natural gloss and flexible hold.
